Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a non-invasive procedure used to treat dry eye and improve cosmetic features of the skin. IPL is also used for facial hair removal.
Are you suffering from red, dry, itchy or burning eyes? You are not alone. It is estimated between 30 to 40 million Americans are suffering from Dry Eye Disease. Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) is believed to account for 86% of all cases of Dry Eye Disease. Symptoms of Dry Eye Disease secondary to MGD can result in eye pain, blurry vision, foreign body sensation and dry or even watery eyes, significantly impacting your quality of life.
OptiLIGHT is the first and only light therapy FDA-approved for Dry Eye management. OptiLIGHT uses Lumenis patented Optimal Pulse Technology which uses precise, intense broad spectrum light, to address inflammation. It has been precisely developed to reach the delicate contours of the treatment area safely, gently and effectively. This technology has helped numerous patients find a real, long-lasting solution for their Dry Eye Disease.
Intense Pulsed Light therapy can also be used to improve the color and texture of the skin without surgery. This is known as a photo-facial. IPL is more gentle on skin than a laser but usually requires for treatments for comparable results. The IPL targets age spots from the sun and hormonal changes as well as unwanted redness or visible blood vessels, even from rosacea. Your doctor will develop an individualized treatment plan based on your skin type and goals.
The number of IPL treatments varies based on the individual and their dry eye severity or specific skin concerns; however, generally four treatments are recommended spaced four weeks apart. Then one treatment per year is recommended for subsequent years.
The IPL Procedure
Your treatment will begin with you being given a pre-moistened wipe to cleanse your face. If you choose to have a photo-facial along with your dry eye treatment, photos will be taken to document your progress along the treatment series. A shield will then be placed over your eyes and a layer of cooling gel will be applied to your treatment area.
A probe will then be used to administer pulses of light around your lower eyelids. You will see flashes of light during the procedure but your eyes will remain protected. Your doctor will likely perform four passes across the lower eyelids during each session for a complete dry eye treatment.
If you choose to add a photo-facial for improved facial cosmetics, settings will be changed specific to your skin type and target areas. Your doctor will then administer the IPL around the rest of your face.
When the procedure is complete, the cooling gel will be removed followed by your protective eyewear. You may notice blurry vision immediately following the procedure which is temporary. This is a positive sign as it means a lot of oil buildup in the meibomian glands has been expressed. Your doctor or technician will then apply sunscreen to your face prior to your leaving the office.
After Your Treatment
The majority of our patients report improvement in their dry eye symptoms as well cosmetic improvement of their dermatological concerns after the very first treatment. Your skin may feel slightly sunburned and you may experience some redness and swelling immediately after treatment. Pigmented areas may become rough in texture as they are naturally exfoliated by the body. You may notice darkening pigmentation known as “coffee grounds” which will clear after 7-10 days. You can reapply makeup following treatment. Following your IPL treatment, it is best to avoid excessive sun exposure, prescription strength retinol, AHA / BHA and exfoliants and scratching or picking at your skin.
